Seneca College Opticianry Practicum – Work Term and Clinical Experience

One of the most valuable parts of the Opticianry program at Seneca College is the hands-on practicum, known as OPT350 Work Term. This course provides students with essential real-world experience in optical and clinical environments.

The practicum requires a minimum of 250 hours of supervised fieldwork, during which students must complete at least 125 multifocal fittings and other dispensing tasks under the supervision of a licensed optician. These work placements are designed to help students develop confidence, technical accuracy, and customer service skills essential for the profession.

Seneca’s strong partnerships with optical clinics, retail chains, and laboratories allow students to experience a variety of real workplace settings. Some placements are paid, while others are unpaid but provide valuable clinical experience that helps students prepare for licensing exams and employment.

Throughout the practicum, students are expected to maintain professionalism, accuracy in patient records, and strong communication with supervisors. Many graduates credit this part of the program as the reason they found jobs quickly after completing their studies.

At ECP Vision, we support opticianry students and professionals by sharing detailed insights about educational programs like Seneca’s. If you have completed your work term or are preparing for one, share your experience here to help future students succeed.
