Seneca Opticianry Program – Full-Time vs Part-Time Study Options

The Seneca College Opticianry program offers both full-time and part-time study options, giving students flexibility to balance education with work or family responsibilities.

Full-Time Program:

The full-time diploma program is typically completed over two academic years (four semesters). Classes run on campus several days a week, combining classroom instruction with practical laboratory and clinical training. Students in the full-time option complete all required theory, lab work, and their practicum placement within this two-year period.

Part-Time Program:

The part-time option is ideal for those already working in optical or retail environments who wish to study at a slower pace. Courses are offered through Seneca’s School of Part-Time Studies, allowing students to complete one or two subjects per semester. The total duration varies depending on how many courses are taken each term, but usually ranges between three to five years.

Key Differences:

  • Full-time students experience faster completion and continuous hands-on training.
  • Part-time students benefit from scheduling flexibility and can often apply real-world experience directly to their coursework.
  • Both streams include the same licensing and practicum requirements before graduation.

At ECP Vision, we recommend that future opticianry students carefully evaluate their time availability, work commitments, and financial resources before choosing their study path. Both options lead to the same professional credential and prepare graduates for licensing with the College of Opticians of Ontario (COO).
